About SLI

Sign Languages International (SLI) was established in 1992 and, since launching its postgraduate diploma and NVQ interpreting programmes in 1998, has trained and qualified more than 200 British Sign Language – English interpreters and successfully supported in excess of 230 Level 4 BSL students (including 57 Deaf candidates).

A major part of SLI's mission is to be collaborative; to co-operate actively with universities and other organisations to improve the standard of interpreting services for Deaf people. In 1997 SLI developed the part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Interpreting for the University of Central Lancashire and, in 2003, the MA in Interpreting Studies: BSL – English for the University of Leeds Centre for Translation Studies.

International activities include training and consultancy in the USA (Madonna University, Michigan), Denmark (The Total Communication Center, Aarhus), Italy (The Italian Association of Sign Language Interpreters) and Hungary (The Hungarian Association of Sign Language Interpreters).

SLI is managed by Peter Llewellyn-Jones and Jayne Clarke and prides itself on its innovative approach to sign language teaching and interpreter training. Its tutors are all fully qualified practitioners and experienced teachers who are committed to helping students to achieve their potential in a non-threatening, supportive learning environment.

SLI is a founder member of the Prompt Payer register of ethical companies.
